AI Hackathon Highlight – SPE-KSA in Collaboration with Amazon Web Services

As part of the 2025 SPE AI Symposium held on February 4-5, the SPE-KSA Young Professionals Committee successfully organized an AI Hackathon in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) from February 2-5. The event attracted over 42 participants, including young professionals and students, who worked alongside six AWS Solution Architects to develop innovative solutions using Generative AI. The hackathon featured two key challenges: 1. Automating Drilling Reports Using GenAI: Participants designed and developed AI-driven solutions to streamline the creation and analysis of drilling reports, enhancing efficiency and accuracy. 2. Preventive Maintenance Using GenAI: Teams applied Generative AI models to predict equipment failures, enabling proactive maintenance strategies to improve rig reliability and reduce downtime. The event concluded with the recognition of three winning teams that presented exceptional solutions demonstrating technical creativity, practical application, and alignment with industry needs. The judging panel, comprising experts from Aramco, SLB, and AWS, provided valuable insights and feedback, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation process. This collaboration with AWS empowered participants to apply GenAI technologies to real-world energy sector challenges, showcasing the potential of AI in driving innovation and operational efficiency.
