UnCAP is a new initiative added to the Student Outreach Program in SPE-KSA Section aiming to stimulate undergraduates creative minds, enriching them with the technical knowledge and enlighten them about the future requirements of oil & gas industry.

The first UnCAP program will be conducted this year during ATS&E in a Hackathon style. Undergraduate participants from different GCC universities will be given two and half days to deliver innovative solutions for challenges in oil & gas industry. Each university can have a team of 4 members with assigning one of them as a team leader to establish an easier communication. During the hackathon, participants will have access to subject matter experts and young professional mentors who will help them throughout the hackathon. Field Trips will be conducted as part of the program.

  • SPE member.
  • GCC nationality.
  • Undergraduate student.
  • Majoring in Engineering Science/ Geoscience.
  • Every participant brings his/her own Laptop.

Field trips is one of the best ways to provide students with real world experiences. It adds more educational value to the program. It also helps the students to connect the real working environment with what they are learning in the school. Different field trips will be planned along with the Hackathon at ATS&E during contest hours. Field trips will be related to the topic chosen by the team. Examples of field trips includes RTOC, PUSH, GOC and Emerson.

Young professional can volunteer by mentoring the participants during the Hackathon. Mentors will be responsible for guiding and helping the teams to make decisions about their project and sharing knowledge and technical advices.

  • Has at least four years of work experience
  • Younger than 35 years old
  • Holding engineering, science, or geoscience degree

UnCAP Hackathon Description

Teams will be given a list of challenges related to oil & gas industry to select from. Each team will be given two and half days to find an intelligent solution for the challenge and deliver a PowerPoint presentation at 2019 ATS&E in front of professional visitors by the end of the event. The presentation should be no longer than 10 minutes and it is optional to be presented by only one member nominated by the team or all of them. It must clearly identify the issue and corresponding proposal.

What Are We Looking For?

The theme of this Hackathon is Fourth Industrial Revolution 4.0. Teams are required to propose innovative solution for their challenge using one of the fourth industrial revolution fields listed below:

  • Artificial Intelligence

  • Advanced materials such as nanotechnology, advanced chemistry, advanced biology, etc.

  • Advanced robotics

  • Advanced Visualization such as augmented reality and virtual reality.

  • Big data analytics such as predictive analytics, data mining, etc.

  • High performance computing

  • Internet of things

  • Simulation

Judging Criteria

  • Novelty and originality of the solution

  • Applicability of the solution

  • Creativity in presentation delivery


  • Winning team will be recognized during the ATS&E and each team member will be receiving a valuable award


  • Participants will be sponsored by SPE-KSA chapter on the below items:

    • Maximum of 800 SR flight ticket reimbursement per participant

    • Hotel expenses

    • Transportation to and from the ATS&E

    • Field trips Transportation
